Mackenyu Maeda to Star in Live-Action Mashle Film Directed by Yūichi Fukuda

The live-action film adapting Hajime Kōmoto’s Mashle: Magic and Muscles manga announced its star and director Thursday. An early teaser video and teaser visual revealed Mackenyu Maeda as Mash Burnedead, with Yūichi Fukuda directing.

The film opens on March 19, 2027. Warner Brothers and Fuji TV are overseeing the project, CREDEUS is producing, and TOHO will distribute it.

Fukuda’s directing credits include:

• The 2026 Sgt. Frog film
• Live-action Gintama
• Sakamoto Days
• Under Ninja
• Super Salaryman Mr. Saenai

Shueisha’s synopsis places the story in a world where people use magic for everything. Deep in a forest, a young man without magic spends his days training and building muscle, living peacefully with his father.

When his life comes under threat, he must rely on his muscular body against magic users pursuing him. The unusual magical fantasy pits intensely trained muscles against magic.

Viz Media’s Shonen Jump and Shueisha’s MANGA Plus both published the manga digitally in English. Viz Media also releases print editions.

The manga began in Japan’s Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2020 and concluded in July 2023. Shueisha released its 18th and final collected volume alongside a fan book in October 2023.

The anime adaptation’s seasons include:

• Season one premiered in Japan in April 2023 and ran for 12 episodes. Crunchyroll streamed it as it aired and offered an English dub.
• Season two premiered in January 2024 and ran for 12 episodes. Crunchyroll again streamed the episodes as they aired and offered an English dub.
• Season three, Mashle: Magic and Muscles - Tri-Magicathalon Divine Visionary Final Exam Arc, adapts Kōmoto’s manga and will stream on Crunchyroll in January.

The anime project as a whole is described as a “complete” adaptation.

The franchise also has several novels and two stage play adaptations. Its smartphone puzzle game, Mashle: Muscle Puzzle, launched in April 2025.
