The new Nippon Anime Awards aims to build a lasting anime award that represents Japan. Its launch was announced during Tokyo Anime Next.

The announcement came on Monday at Tokyo Tatemono Brillia Hall during Tokyo Anime Next, a special one-time event held in Tokyo from October 30 to November 2.

Organized by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA), the Nippon Anime Awards will take place at SGC Hall Ariake on November 21, 2027. The organizers describe the inaugural event as the first step toward creating an award that represents Japan and remains meaningful across generations.

In September, the Tokyo Anime Award Festival (TAAF) announced that its events had come to an end that March. TAAF 2026 took place from March 13 to 16.

TAAF began in 2014 as an independent festival and held 13 editions. It grew out of the Tokyo Anime Award, which was part of the Tokyo International Anime Fair from 2002 to 2013.
