Akio Iyoku said work began a few years ago. He described the project as an enhanced version of Dragon Ball Super, with a reconstructed story alongside new and redrawn shots.
According to the official announcement, the production adds extensive new footage, revises existing scenes, and renders all footage again. It also features newly recorded dubbing, additional music and sound effects, and a complete restructuring of the story.
The announcement said the enhanced edition uses current visual techniques to give every scene greater impact and immersion, particularly the battles. It described the result as more faithful to Akira Toriyama’s original concepts and worldbuilding, with a highly satisfying level of broadcast quality.
The staff said Dragon Ball Super would begin again under the name Dragon Ball Super: Beerus in fall 2026.
The story takes place several years after the fierce fight against Majin Buu, as Earth enjoys a brief return to peace. Beerus, the God of Destruction, then wakes from a long, deep sleep.
Kai and Supreme Kai fear his awakening because they know he can destroy entire planets. After hearing about a Saiyan who defeated Frieza, Beerus suddenly appears before Goku.
Earth faces grave danger when Beerus, the universe’s strongest being, targets it. Goku and his allies enter a cosmic battle against the God of Destruction that threatens to shake the entire universe.
Dragon Ball Super originally ran from July 2015 through March 2018, totaling 131 episodes. Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed it during its broadcast, and Funimation released it on home video.
Funimation added the English dub to its streaming service in December 2016. The dub then debuted on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block in January 2017.
