Sony reported 97.9 million lifetime PS5 shipments, including 2.6 million during July-September and 4.2 million so far this fiscal year. The update follows console and subscription price increases, while Sony plans to make all new PlayStation game releases digital only starting in January 2028.

Sony has shipped 97.9 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide, the company announced Thursday. Its consolidated second-quarter financial results cover the period ending September 30.

Sony shipped 4.2 million consoles so far this fiscal year. The July-September second quarter contributed 2.6 million of those units.

The PS5 passed 90 million shipments last February, after exceeding 80 million in August 2025. Earlier milestones tracked sales:

  • July 2021: Over 10 million sold worldwide since launch, making the PS5 Sony's fastest-selling console.
  • June 2022: Over 20 million sold worldwide.
  • January 2023: Sales crossed 30 million.
  • July 2023: Sales crossed 40 million.
  • December 2023: Sales surpassed 50 million.

Sony increased prices for the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal peripheral beginning April 2. It attributed the increases to "continued pressures in the global economic landscape."

Beginning May 20, Sony also raised PlayStation Plus online gaming subscription prices for new customers in select regions.

On July 1, Sony announced it would stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation console games starting in January 2028. Every new game release from that month will be digital only.

The change excludes games already released and those shipping on discs before January 2028. Sony said it is adapting "to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs."

The PS5 launched on November 12, 2020, in these markets:

  • United States
  • Japan
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea

Most other markets received the console on November 19, 2020. A smaller replacement model rolled out across various territories from November through early December 2023.

The PlayStation 5 Pro shipped in November 2024. Its features include:

  • PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution
  • 120 FPS
  • Advanced ray tracing
  • 2TB of SSD storage
  • An upgraded GPU with "28% faster memory"
  • AI-driven upscaling for clearer images

Sony released a PS5 Digital Edition model supporting only Japanese in Japan in November 2025. It costs 55,000 yen, about US$355.

That makes it cheaper than Japan's current multilingual PS5 Digital Edition, which sells for 72,980 yen, about US$471.
