Keigo Maki will launch a manga adaptation of the Witch on the Holy Night (Mahōtsukai no Yoru) anime film on November 11. Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine announced the adaptation Wednesday in this year's 49th issue, with the debut set for its next issue.

Kodansha also streamed a commercial for the manga featuring the film's lead actors: Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko Aozaki and Yūsuke Kobayashi as Soujyuro Sizuki. Maki's previous work includes Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie.

The film opens in Japan on November 20. The original visual novel's smartphone edition launches that same day.

The original story takes place in the late 1980s. Its protagonist, Aoko Aozaki, is one of two sisters descended from a long line of modern mages.

Despite her lack of interest in magic, Aoko is unexpectedly named heir to her family's magical art. She reluctantly starts training under Alice Kuonji, a young witch living in an isolated manor on a hill.

Aoko juggles her magical studies with her role as her school's student council president. She also meets transfer student Sōjūrō Shizuki, whose name appears as Soujyuro Sizuki in the game's English version and who knows little of the modern world.

Meanwhile, Aoko faces schemes from her older sister, Tōko Aozaki, who believes she has been deprived of her birthright.

The game's releases include:

  • April 2012: Type-Moon shipped the original visual novel, featuring graphics by Hirokazu Koyama, with two sequels planned.
  • December 2022: Aniplex released the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch editions in the West on the same day they launched in Japan.
  • December 2023: Type-Moon released the game on Steam, its most recent release.

The PS4 and Switch editions have sold more than 150,000 copies worldwide.

The story provides one of the few tangible links within Type-Moon's loosely connected shared universe and cosmology. English-speaking fans call it the “Nasuverse,” which includes:

  • Tsukihime
  • Fate/stay night
  • The Garden of Sinners

An older Aoko serves as an early mentor to Tsukihime protagonist Shiki Tohno. An older Tōko employs The Garden of Sinners protagonist Shiki Ryōgi.

Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- remakes Type-Moon's Tsukihime dōjin visual novel game. It launched in Japan for PS4 and Switch in August 2021, followed by an English release on both platforms in June 2024.

Witch on the Holy Night began as one of Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi's earliest collaborations in the mid-1990s, before they founded Type-Moon. Originally a novel, its draft circulated only among friends; Nasu and Takeuchi never officially published it.
