Paramount+ released the official trailer for its animated adaptation of Sega's Golden Axe games on Thursday. It confirmed a September 16 premiere on Paramount+, following an earlier announcement naming Comedy Central.
The 10-episode series comes from American animation studio Titmouse. Mike McMahan, whose credits include Star Trek: Lower Decks and Solar Opposites, co-created the show with Joe Chandler. Both serve as executive producers.
The cast includes:
- Matthew Rhys as Gillius Thunderhead
- Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib
- Lisa Gilroy as Tyrus Flare
- Liam McIntyre as Ax Battler
- Carl Tart as Chronos “Evil” Lait
CBS Studios' CBS Eye Animation Productions is producing the series with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film. Additional executive producers are:
- Sega's Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi and Toru Nakahara
- Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina
- Original Film's Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Toby Ascher
Paramount+ describes the story as a tribute to Sega's iconic 1989 game. Legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead reunite to rescue Yuria from Death Adder, an evil giant who keeps returning from death.
Their mission becomes more difficult with Hampton Squib, an inexperienced adventurer whose heroic ambitions far outstrip his abilities and preparation. Despite their flaws, the group must work together to end Death Adder's threat permanently.
Sega announced a new, untitled Golden Axe game at The Game Awards on December 7, 2023. The franchise began in 1989 with the original Golden Axe, a side-scrolling arcade beat-'em-up, and inspired a stage play in 2018.
