The press release places the story in 2096, nearly a century after magic became an established technology. Siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki are approaching winter in their second year of high school.

Older brother Tatsuya has a fatal weakness in his magical abilities. His younger sister Miyuki is beautiful, intelligent and otherwise perfect, with unrivaled magical talent. He is an irregular student; she is a star pupil.

Despite their differences, the siblings share a peaceful life until a letter arrives. It invites them to a New Year's Banquet at the Yotsuba Clan's main manor.

Clan head Maya Yotsuba and the leaders of every branch family will attend. The gathering will reveal the clan's next leader.

Miyuki fears that the clan will choose her. Taking the position would require her to marry, ending her unmarried life and the days she spends beside Tatsuya.

Yet leading the clan would also let Miyuki change Tatsuya's standing as a Guardian, a role in which he has long faced disdain. Seeking his freedom, she makes a major decision on the journey to the manor and tells her brother she will become the Yotsuba Clan's head.
