Unlike the new television series, New Sgt. Frog the Movie: The Earth Is in Mortal Peril as Soon as We Come Back! brought back cast members from earlier anime installments.

The franchise’s new 20th anniversary anime film project opened in Japan on June 26. It placed fourth on its opening weekend, earning 150,809,200 yen, or about US$927,900, over its first three days.

Crunchyroll began adding the earlier television anime to its catalog in 2021. Its synopsis follows Keroro, Sergeant Frog, who leads a warrior platoon dispatched to conquer Earth.

The amphibious invaders scatter after learning how much humans enjoy dissecting their comrades. Their mission is canceled, leaving Keroro behind.

The formerly proud soldier now handles a vacuum more often than weapons, far from battlefield glory, though he has his own room. With the invasion barely progressing, he occasionally hopes to beat his karaoke addiction and reunite his troops.

Sunrise’s earlier adaptation of Mine Yoshizaki’s Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunsō) manga aired from 2004 to 2011 and led to five feature films. ADV Films licensed the anime without releasing it; Funimation later issued two “seasons” on DVD.

Discotek also licensed the anime. Its release covers all 358 episodes through successive seasonal SD Blu-ray Disc volumes, starting in 2021. Seasons 5–7 followed in 2024.

North American manga publisher Tokyopop released 20 volumes of the original manga before closing its doors in 2011.
