GKIDS confirmed in a Thursday press release that Studio Ghibli’s 2010 film Arrietty will reach IMAX cinemas in the UK and Ireland on Wednesday, October 14, and October 15. A wider cinema release begins Friday, October 16.
The film will screen in English-dubbed and English-subtitled versions. Screenings will use the UK dub rather than the US version.
The UK dub features Tom Holland’s first film role, before he became Spider-Man in the MCU films. Its cast includes:
- Tom Holland
- Saoirse Ronan
- Olivia Colman
- Geraldine McEwan
- Mark Strong
Directed by Academy Award nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Arrietty adapts Mary Norton’s The Borrowers. Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa wrote the screenplay, and Miyazaki also handled project planning.
The story follows tiny people known as Borrowers, who secretly live beneath the floorboards, hidden from humans. While gathering supplies, the brave Arrietty encounters a human boy named Sho, who discovers her. Their growing friendship leads to a heartwarming adventure.
The press release describes the adaptation as visually beautiful and full of adventure, and Norton’s novel as one of the most beloved children’s books ever.
Before Arrietty arrives, GKIDS will release Whisper of the Heart, Yoshifumi Kondō’s 1995 Studio Ghibli film. IMAX screenings begin Wednesday, September 16, followed by a wider cinema release on Friday, September 18.
Whisper of the Heart will also screen in English-dubbed and subtitled versions. Screening dates and venues for both films will be listed at https://www.gkids.co.uk/tickets/.
