Square Enix’s Shonen Gangan announced a new series for Kyo Shirodaira and Yuri Kimura’s The Record of a Fallen Vampire on Thursday. The news appeared in the magazine’s October issue.
The new manga, The Record of a Fallen Vampire: A Dog’s Song for Dogs (Vampire Jūjikai: Inu ni wa Inu no Uta), launches in the next issue on October 9. That issue will also carry an “important announcement” about the series, which returns after 19 years.
Manga UP! Global publishes the original manga digitally in English. Its story follows Vampire King Akabara “Red Rose” Strauss, who lost his kingdom and queen thousands of years ago.
Unable to kill the queen, humans sealed her away and created thousands of false seals to hide her location from the king. Akabara still searches for her while relentless dhampires pursue him.
His search takes a darker turn with the arrival of the Black Swan. Every 50 years, this entity possesses a young human girl and grants her the power to destroy both the Vampire King and his queen.
The Black Swan becomes stronger with every incarnation. Its 49th host could bring Akabara’s life to an end.
The original manga’s publication history spans Japan and English releases:
- Shirodaira and Kimura launched it in Square Enix’s Shonen Gangan in December 2003.
- Square Enix shipped its ninth collected volume in April 2007.
- Viz Media began publishing it in English in May 2008 and shipped the ninth volume in May 2010.
Shirodaira also wrote the 2011 novel behind Chasiba Katase’s In/Spectre (Kyokō Suiri or Invented Interface) manga. Katase launched the adaptation in Kodansha’s Shōnen Magazine R in April 2015. It also began running in Monthly Shonen Magazine in 2019.
Kodansha shipped In/Spectre’s 25th collected volume on May 15.
The manga inspired a television anime that premiered in January 2020. Crunchyroll co-produced the adaptation as part of its Crunchyroll Originals slate and streamed an English dub. A second season debuted in 2023.
