The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Kinema Citrus' original anime Goodbye, Lara (Sayonara Lara) announced a manga adaptation on Tuesday. Citrus creator Saburouta will draw the adaptation, which launches on Kadokawa's KadoComi manga platform in October.
The anime premiered on Tokyo MX on Sunday, July 5 at 24:30, effectively July 6 at 12:30 a.m. BS Asahi and YTV aired it later that night, and AT-X also carries the series.
Crunchyroll streams the anime as it airs and also offers an English dub.
The anime's staff includes:
- Takushi Koide, director at Kinema Citrus.
- Anna Kawahara, series script supervisor.
- Shiori Tani, character designer.
- Yuma Yamaguchi, music composer at Kadokawa.
Ikimono-gakari performs the opening theme, "Sayonara Lara."
Crunchyroll's synopsis introduces Lara, a mermaid princess who falls in love with a human prince. She takes a witch's potion to become human. The spell carries a price: without finding true love, she will disappear forever as sea foam.
Two hundred years later, Lara awakens in Lake Biwa with one last opportunity at life and love.
The story resembles Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, following a mermaid whose wish for a human's love breaks a taboo. After dying, she is reborn 200 years later in Lake Biwa in modern-day Japan and must learn to live among humans.
Lake Biwa lies in Japan's Shiga prefecture, which is also home to director Takushi Koide's hometown.
