Akira Failing in Love Passes 1 Million Copies in Worldwide Circulation

Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday announced on September 16 that Shinta Harekawa’s Akira Failing in Love (Momose Akira no Hatsukoi Hatan-chū) has surpassed 1 million copies in circulation worldwide. The announcement appeared in this year’s combined 42nd and 43rd issue.

Viz Media publishes the manga in English. Its fourth volume came out on September 8, while Shogakukan released the eighth Japanese volume on September 16.

The story follows Akira as she returns to the countryside for high school, determined to win over her childhood crush. Both are fools in love: she cannot recognize that he already likes her back.

Harekawa began the series in Weekly Shonen Sunday in August 2024. Shogakukan released its first collected volume in December 2024.

Harekawa’s other manga include:

• Senpai, This Can’t Be Love! (Sempai! Danjite Koi de wa!), a boys’ love manga launched on Kadokawa’s Comic Fleur website in July 2019.
• Sempai! Danjite Koi de wa! Brush up, a sequel that began in 2020.
• Three Exorcism Siblings (Tengu Barai no San Kyōdai), which debuted in Coamix’s Web Comic Zenyon in 2021.

Kadokawa published one collected volume of Senpai, This Can’t Be Love! in July 2019. Yen Press released it in English in June 2024. The manga also received an eight-episode live-action adaptation in 2022.

Kadokawa released the first Brush up volume in September 2020 and the second in May 2023. Yen Press published the sequel’s first English volume in December 2024.

Coamix released the first Three Exorcism Siblings volume in 2022, followed by its seventh and final volume in September 2023. Titan Comics licensed the series and published its fourth English volume on July 28.
