From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman will return for a third season. The anime’s website marked the announcement with a visual and a message from Beryl Gardenant’s voice actor, Hiroaki Hirata.

The anime adaptation of Shigeru Sagazaki’s From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman (Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru: Tada no Inaka no Kenjutsu Shihan Datta noni, Taisei Shita Deshitachi ga Ore o Hōttekurenai Ken) announced a third season through its official website Wednesday.

The site also released a commemorative visual and a video message from Hiroaki Hirata, who voices protagonist Beryl Gardenant. The second season’s 12th and final episode aired that same day.

Season two premiered July 8 in the “IMAnimation W” block on TV Asahi and its affiliated channels across Japan. It also airs on AT-X and BS Asahi. Amazon Prime Video began its exclusive worldwide streaming run July 9.

The second season brought back these staff members:

  • Director Akio Kazumi (Loner Life in Another World, Fist of the Blue Sky Regenesis), working at Passione and Hayabusa Film.
  • Series script supervisor Kunihiko Okada (The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, By the Grace of the Gods season 2).
  • Character designer and chief animation director Satsuki Hayasaka (The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki).
  • Composer Yasuharu Takanashi (Baki Hanma vs. Kengan Ashura, Fairy Tail).

Rock band Unicorn performs the second season’s opening song, “Kurenai no Ha” (Crimson Leaf). BLUE ENCOUNT performs its ending song, “Mikansei” (Unfinished).

The first season debuted in April 2025 and streams exclusively worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.

J-Novel Club licenses the novels. Its synopsis follows Beryl Gardinant, a sword instructor running a dojo in a remote rural village who considers himself a modest old man. He once aspired to become a celebrated master swordsman, but believes those ambitions belong to his youth.

A famous former student unexpectedly visits with life-changing news: Beryl has been named special instructor to the knights of the Liberion Order. The appointment takes him to the capital, where he reconnects with former pupils.

They include elite knights, an outstanding wizard and an adventurer who has reached the guild’s highest possible rank. Beryl cannot understand why these accomplished students still seek his instruction, since he thinks they no longer need him.

The story asks whether Beryl can fulfill his new role—and whether his devoted students will ever give him any peace.

Sagazaki began publishing the story on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in November 2020. Square Enix publishes the novel volumes, featuring illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima.

Kazuki Satō started adapting the novels into manga in Akita Shoten’s Dokodemo Young Champion magazine in August 2021. Yen Press publishes the manga in English. The franchise also includes two spinoff manga.
