Publisher Activision describes Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice as a single-player, third-person action-adventure game with RPG elements. Hidetaka Miyazaki directed the game, which Activision published.
Players control a hardened warrior seeking to rescue his master, a young lord descended from an ancient bloodline, and take revenge on his archnemesis.
The setting reimagines Japan’s late-1500s Sengoku period, a brutal, bloody era of constant struggles between life and death. The protagonist, called the “one-armed wolf,” is a disgraced, disfigured warrior saved from the edge of death.
Players confront towering enemies using lethal prosthetic tools and powerful ninja abilities. Combat combines stealth, vertical movement and bloody, direct clashes. The description urges players to exact revenge, reclaim their honor and kill with ingenuity.
The original game launched in March 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC through Steam. Worldwide sales exceeded 2 million copies in fewer than 10 days.
