Publisher Activision describes Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice as a single-player, third-person action-adventure game with RPG elements, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and published by Activision.
Players control a hardened warrior seeking to rescue his master, a young lord descended from an ancient bloodline, and take revenge on his archenemy.
The setting reimagines Japan's Sengoku era in the late 1500s, a brutal, blood-soaked time of relentless life-or-death conflict. The protagonist, called the “one-armed wolf,” is a disgraced, disfigured warrior saved from near death.
Players confront towering enemies using lethal prosthetic tools and powerful ninja abilities. Combat combines stealth, vertical movement and intense direct clashes in bloody encounters, with revenge, restored honor and ingenious killing as its stated aims.
The original game arrived on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC through Steam in March 2019. Worldwide sales exceeded 2 million copies in fewer than 10 days.
