Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway takes place in U.C. 0105, twelve years after Char's Rebellion. The anti-government organization Mafty, headed by someone known as Mafty Navue Erin, opposes the Earth Federation's corrupt leadership. Its terrorist attacks and assassinations of government officials win support from an angry population.
Mafty's leader is secretly Hathaway Noa, son of war hero Bright Noa. Guided by Amuro Ray and Char Aznable's ideals, Hathaway seeks to follow their example and forge a way forward through armed resistance.
His encounters with Federation officer Kenneth Sleg and Gigi Andalucia, a mysterious young beauty, dramatically change his destiny.
In The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, past trauma troubles Hathaway as he feels drawn to Gigi, whose unusual powers awaken memories in him. Her cryptic words influence him while he continues preparations for MAFTY's attack on the Adelaide Conference.
Earth Federation Forces officer Kenneth Sleg prepares to defend the conference and eliminate MAFTY. Handley Yoxon of the Criminal Police Organization approaches him with a secret proposal.
As Hathaway and Kenneth work toward their separate objectives, Gigi leaves for Hong Kong to carry out her own role.
The film project spans a trilogy. Its second installment previously carried the working title Kidō Senshi Gundam Senkō no Hathaway: San of Bright.
Producer Ogata explained that the Japanese katakana “San” (サン) can mean either “sun” or “son,” referencing Hathaway Noa's relationship to Bright Noa. Ogata also said the second film would differ in some respects from Yoshiyuki Tomino's original novel series.
