Japan Society announced Sunday that it will host the U.S. premiere of Atsushi Nishigori’s original anime film Grotesqqque in New York City on October 8. CloverWorks and Aniplex of America are collaborating on the event.
Nishigori will attend and introduce the film before the screening. The project previously carried the title Grotesque.
The film opens in Japan on November 6. Its world premiere took place at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, which ran from July 16 to August 2.
The omnibus brings together three stories with different worldviews:
- “A(E)liens”
- “Yoroshiku★Girl,” also called “4649 Girl” and pronounced “Yoroshiku★Shōjo.” The title plays on “Nice to Meet You★Girl,” while its kanji literally mean “Evening Dew Heads to Its Death★Girl.” In Japanese, 4649 can be read as “Yoroshiku.”
- “Nocturne: Nuit Grotesque” (“Nocturne: Kono Grotesque na Yoru ni”), literally “Nocturne: On This Grotesque Night.” An earlier video romanized the title as “Nocturn: En Cette Nuit Grotesque.”
Nishigori, whose credits include The IDOLM@STER and DARLING in the FRANXX, directs the film, writes its screenplay and designs its characters.
METALVERSE performs the opening theme, “Shoot Shoot Shoot.” Haoto sings the ending theme, with lyrics written by momosu momosu.
The film comes from JOEN, a company jointly established by:
- Aniplex, Sony’s media subsidiary
- CloverWorks, Aniplex’s animation studio
- Wit Studio, Production I.G’s sister company
- Shueisha, the publisher
CloverWorks producer Yūichi Fukushima and Wit Studio producer Tetsuya Nakatake serve as JOEN’s representative directors.
