Obocchama-kun Reborn Set for Japanese TV Debut in 2027
Chie Kōjiro returns as the lead in the 26-episode series, which began airing on India's Sony Yay! in August 2025.

TV Asahi will air the Indian-animated Obocchama-kun Reborn in Japan in 2027. The series adapts previously unused manga stories and adds new stories supervised by creator Yoshinori Kobayashi.
TV Asahi announced Thursday that its new Indian-animated series based on Yoshinori Kobayashi's Obocchama-kun manga will reach Japanese television in 2027. It will air as Obocchama-kun Reborn.
The broadcaster also released a teaser promotional video and visual. Chie Kōjiro returns as protagonist Obocchama-kun, reprising her role from the original 1989 anime.
The series began airing in India on Sony Yay! in August 2025. It comprises 26 episodes running 22 minutes each and targets children ages 6–11.
Production details include:
- Sidheswar Shukla directed the series at Green Gold Animation.
- Sony Pictures Networks India, Sony Group's local subsidiary, is collaborating on the project.
- Shinei Animation produced the scenario under Yoshinori Kobayashi's supervision.
The series includes manga stories that had never been animated, alongside new stories supervised by Kobayashi.
SPNI business head Ambesh Tiwari discussed the original anime's major success in India during the 2020 lockdowns. He spoke with Animation Xpress at the Animation & More Summit in September 2025.
Tiwari credited the localization team's work with making the anime relatable to Indian viewers.
TV Asahi's Maiko Sumida explained the choice to animate the new series in India at its Japanese premiere last December. The screening took place at the 1st Aichi-Nagoya International Animation Film Festival.
Sumida said strong Indian demand for a sequel meant production in Japan would take too long. Developing the scenario in Japan and animating in India allowed the team to meet the schedule.
The anime's YouTube channel describes the 1989 series as an upper-class comedy about the extremely crude Obocchama, also called Obo Cchama or Obocchama-Kun. He inherits the wealthy Obo family's fortune and enrolls at the elite Denenchofu Academy.
The story follows Cchama and his eccentric elementary school classmates:
- Kakino Shuhei, the first friend Cchama makes without using money.
- Ojo Samayo, Cchama's fiancée, whose family operates the Ojo Company.
- Fukurokoji Kanemitsu, whose family is almost as wealthy as the Obos.
- Binbo Taijo, or “Binbocchama,” a proud boy from a formerly prosperous family.
The original adaptation of Kobayashi's manga ran for 164 episodes in Japan from 1989 to 1992.
Shogakukan serialized the manga in CoroCoro Comic from 1986 to 1994 and released 24 collected volumes.
The article was corrected and updated to clarify that this series is the Japanese-Indian co-production announced in 2024.
